Most students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and often gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location must be taken into account, there are other critical qualifiers also. For instance, you must find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and education options that are available.

Radiology Tech Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They may work in Cottageville SC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Cottageville SC health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Cottageville SC radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in South Carolina or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Cottageville SC employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Cottageville 29435As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Cottageville SC residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just make certain that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing Cottageville SC x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cottageville SC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the South Carolina xray tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Cottageville SC healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Cottageville SC healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Cottageville SC home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Cottageville SC colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Cottageville SC, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you could be asked. Among the things that hiring managers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not just the private reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and talents you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of routine interview questions, so you need to ready a number of strategies about how you want to address them. Since there are so many factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you in addition to the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down several ideas and anecdotes that pertain to your own experiences and strengths.
