But now that you have chosen to go into the rewarding field of healthcare, just how do you set about selecting the ideal college and program so that you will get the proper training to become a qualified professional? And because most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently practice you may need preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the colleges you are looking at in order to compare each program. A number of prospective students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically settle on the most affordable cost. But while cost and location should be considered, there are other critical qualifiers also. For instance, you need to find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training options that are available.

X-Ray Tech Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Ravenel SC clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also routinely evaluate its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Ravenel SC medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Ravenel SC radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in South Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several accept other options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Ravenel SC employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Degrees

This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Ravenel SC home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

When you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and evaluating Ravenel SC x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ravenel SC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the South Carolina xray tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Ravenel SC healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Ravenel SC healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Ravenel SC home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Ravenel SC colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Ravenel SC, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to review questions you could be asked. One of the things that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What made you decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and talents you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should prepare some approaches about how you want to answer them. Because there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but take down a few concepts and topics that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample answers can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.
