But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical major job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They can work in Smoot WY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Smoot WY medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Smoot WY radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Wyoming or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Smoot WY employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Smoot 83126As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Smoot WY home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Smoot WY x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Smoot WY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Wyoming xray technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Smoot WY healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Smoot WY healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Smoot WY home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Smoot WY schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Smoot WY, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you may be asked. Among the questions that recruiters often ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of general interview questions, so you should ready some approaches about how you want to respond to them. Given that there are numerous variables that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you in addition to the strengths you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down some ideas and anecdotes that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to include to wow the recruiter.
