Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many provide other options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Taylors SC employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Taylors SC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the South Carolina radiology technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Taylors SC healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Taylors SC home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Taylors SC colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Taylors SC, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
