Radiology Technician Work Summary

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in d Hanis TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As d Hanis TX medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

x-ray machine in d Hanis TXThe basic prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that d Hanis TX radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Texas or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many accept additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous d Hanis TX employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in d Hanis 78850As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your d Hanis TX home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are often less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

After you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating d Hanis TX x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material variable also. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many d Hanis TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Texas radiology tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the d Hanis TX healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with d Hanis TX healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their d Hanis TX home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the d Hanis TX schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in d Hanis TX, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you may be asked. What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, along with a significant number of general interview questions, so you need to prepare several ideas about how you would like to address them.
