  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Cypress TX radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several accept other options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Cypress TX employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Programs

This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Cypress TX home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and assessing Cypress TX x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Cypress TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Texas xray technician programs you are evaluating have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Cypress TX health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Cypress TX healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Cypress TX residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Cypress TX schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Cypress TX, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Some Background on Cypress Texas

Cypress, Texas

Cypress is an unincorporated community in Harris County, Texas, United States located completely inside the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City of Houston. The Cypress area is located along U.S. Highway 290 (Northwest Freeway) is twenty-four miles (35 km) northwest of Downtown Houston. The Cypress urban cluster ranks 50th in the top 100 highest-income urban areas in the United States.

Large scale residential and commercial development beginning in the 1980s transformed the once rural area into one of the Houston area's largest suburban communities.

The recent find of a San Patrice projectile point at the Dimond Knoll site nearby on Cypress Creek attests to a human presence in the area by 7500 BC. By the early historic era, the area around present-day Cypress was populated by Atakapa and Akokisa Indian tribes, but they soon disappeared after the appearance of German settlers in the 1840s;[1]

The German heritage is most notably reflected in the names of some of the major thoroughfares of the area, such as Huffmeister and Telge Roads.[2] General Sam Houston and his Texas Army camped in the area on March 22, 1836 on the way to Harrisburg, which is now in East Houston, just days before the Battle of San Jacinto.[3]

The area remained mostly rural until the early 1990s when developers began construction of several master-planned communities. The area is often referred to as Cy-Fair or Cypress-Fairbanks, which comes from when the Big Cypress School and Fairbanks High School combined in the 1930s to form Cy-Fair High School and the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.[4] In March 2008, the Cypress Historical Society (CHS) was formed as a non-profit corporation with its primary mission being "...to discover, educate, promote, collect, preserve and make available to the public, historical documents and artifacts of the Cypress area".[5] The CHS organization holds regular events aimed at exposing Cypress' residents to the historical and cultural foundation upon which the area was built.
