And considering that most states do mandate that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you may require preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you assess each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. Most prospective students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically settle on the lowest cost. But while cost and location should be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifiers as well. For example, you should ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Job Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Manteo NC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Manteo NC medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that Manteo NC radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in North Carolina or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several accept other options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Manteo NC employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Manteo NC residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing Manteo NC x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Manteo NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the North Carolina xray technician colleges you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Manteo NC health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Manteo NC healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Manteo NC home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Manteo NC colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Manteo NC, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to review questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What made you pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what qualities and skills you possess that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, along with a significant number of routine interview questions, so you need to prepare several ideas about how you want to address them. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you in addition to the abilities you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job.
