Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that Swannanoa NC radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Swannanoa NC employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and evaluating Swannanoa NC x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Swannanoa NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the North Carolina xray tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Swannanoa NC healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Swannanoa NC healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Swannanoa NC residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Swannanoa NC colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Swannanoa NC, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you may be asked. One of the questions that recruiters often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not just the personal reasons you might have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a certain number of general interview questions, so you should organize a number of approaches about how you want to answer them. Because there are several variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down several ideas and anecdotes that relate to your own strengths and experiences.
