Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Georgia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, many Reidsville GA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Reidsville GA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Georgia xray tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Reidsville GA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Reidsville GA colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Reidsville GA, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
