Sorrento FL x-ray tech internship programCongratulations on your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Sorrento FL so you can learn to be a radiologic technologist. But now that you have chosen to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, how do you set about selecting the right college and program so that you will get the proper training to become a qualified professional? And since most states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you may require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you assess each of the colleges you are considering in order to evaluate each program. Many potential students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into account, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For instance, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Work Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical major job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Sorrento FL clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and frequently evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Sorrento FL medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Sorrento FL radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Florida or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional options for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Sorrento FL employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Sorrento 32776As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Sorrento FL residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

When you have selected the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Sorrento FL x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Sorrento FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the Florida xray tech programs you are evaluating have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Sorrento FL healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Sorrento FL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Sorrento FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Sorrento FL colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Sorrento FL, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to consider questions you may be asked. Among the things that recruiters often ask radiographer applicants is "What made you select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not merely the private reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what attributes and talents you possess that make you good at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, along with a significant number of typical interview questions, so you should organize a number of strategies about how you would like to address them. Considering there are so many factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you along with the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down a few ideas and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to wow the interviewer.
