And now that you have decided to go into the rewarding field of healthcare, exactly how do you go about selecting the ideal school and program to ensure that you will receive the appropriate training to become a skilled professional? And considering that the majority of states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you may need preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. A number of potential students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and usually gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location need to be considered, there are additional critical qualifiers as well. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and education options that are offered.

Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They may practice in Silver Springs FL clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Silver Springs FL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Silver Springs FLThe primary requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Silver Springs FL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept other options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Silver Springs FL employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Silver Springs 34488As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically provided in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Silver Springs FL home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Silver Springs FL x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Silver Springs FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Florida radiology tech schools you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Silver Springs FL healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Silver Springs FL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Silver Springs FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Silver Springs FL colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Silver Springs FL, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you might be asked. One of the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you must ready several approaches about how you want to address them. Since there are numerous factors that go into selecting a career, you can answer this primary question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work interests you along with the abilities you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the position. Don't try to memorize a response, but write down a few ideas and topics that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample responses can assist you to develop your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.

Some Background on Silver Springs Florida

Silver Springs, Florida

Silver Springs is an unincorporated community in Marion County, Florida, United States. It is the site of Silver Springs, a group of artesian springs and a historic tourist attraction that is now part of Silver Springs State Park. The community is part of the Ocala metropolitan area.

One of Florida's first tourist attractions, the springs drew visitors even before the U.S. Civil War. Glass-bottom boats have been a popular way to see the 242-acre (98 ha) complex. A small amusement park with various animals, a concert stage, a carousel, and exhibits also developed.

Silver Springs was founded in 1852.[1]

Since the mid-19th century, the natural environment of Silver Springs has attracted visitors from throughout the United States. Glass-bottom boat tours of the springs began in the late 1870s. In the 1920s, W. Carl Ray and W.M. "Shorty" Davidson, after leasing the land from Ed Carmichael (upon whose death the springs were left to the University of Florida), developed the land around the headwaters of the Silver River into an attraction that eventually became known as Silver Springs Nature Theme Park. The attraction featured native animal exhibits, amusement rides, and 30 or 90-minute glass-bottom boat tours of the springs. The 1934 'Princess Donna' is the oldest and only remaining operational boat from this by gone era. The "Princess Donna' currently operates on the Homosassa River in Old Homosassa Florida. In 2013, the State of Florida took over operations of Silver Springs and combined it with the adjacent Silver River State Park to form the new Silver Springs State Park. The T. W. Randall House on the National Register of Historic Places is located to the northeast.

Several defunct tourist attractions were once located near Silver Springs. The Western-themed Six Gun Territory theme park, which included several attractions such as the Southern Railway & Six Gun 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge[2] railroad, operated from 1963 to 1984. The Wild Waters water park also existed in Silver Springs and operated from 1978 to 2016.[3][4][5][6][7][8]
