Seminole FL x-ray tech internship programCongratulations regarding your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Seminole FL in order to train to be a radiologic technician. But now that you have decided to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, just how do you set about picking the right school and program to ensure that you will obtain the proper training to become a qualified professional? And considering that the majority of states do mandate that radiology technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you may need preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s essential that you investigate each of the colleges you are looking at in order to compare each program. Most prospective students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and frequently settle on the most affordable cost. But while cost and location must be taken into consideration, there are additional significant qualifiers also. For example, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

Radiology Technician Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Seminole FL hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Seminole FL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Seminole FL radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Florida or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Seminole FL employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Seminole 33772As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Seminole FL residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Seminole FL x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Seminole FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Florida radiology tech schools you are assessing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Seminole FL health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Seminole FL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Seminole FL home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Seminole FL colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Seminole FL, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you might be asked. Among the things that recruiters typically ask radiographer candidates is "What made you decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not just the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what qualities and abilities you have that make you good at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, in addition to a significant number of general interview questions, so you must organize a number of strategies about how you would like to address them. Since there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you in addition to the abilities you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down some concepts and talking points that pertain to your personal experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.

Some Background on Seminole Florida

Seminole, Florida

Seminole is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,233 at the 2010 census,[5] up from 10,890 in 2000. St. Petersburg College has a campus in the city.

The first white settlement at Seminole was made in the 1840s.[6] The community was named after the Seminole Indians who once inhabited the area.[6] Seminole was incorporated in 1970.[7]

Seminole used to contain a water tower painted in 2000 by artist Tom Stovall. In late 2005, council members expressed dissatisfaction with the design, but residents spoke out in its favor, feeling it made Seminole unique and provided a good landmark for giving directions, however the water tower is no more.[8][9] As of 7/20/17 the city began to demolish the water tower. Efforts by residents to save the water tower went unsuccessful. It will be replaced by a public park.

Seminole is located at 27°50′19″N 82°47′6″W / 27.83861°N 82.78500°W / 27.83861; -82.78500 (27.838502, -82.784913).[10] It is surrounded by Pinellas County enclaves in all directions. Its closest neighbors are Indian Rocks Beach to the northwest, Largo to the north, Pinellas Park to the east, St. Petersburg to the south, and Madeira Beach to the west. Its main arteries are State Road 694 and Alternate U.S. Highway 19. It embraces the lower half of the lower limb of Lake Seminole.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.6 square miles (14.6 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.54 square miles (1.4 km2) (9.58%) is water.[11]
