For example, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in Immokalee FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Immokalee FL medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Immokalee FLThe standard prerequisite for attending a radiology tech program is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Immokalee FL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept additional options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Immokalee FL employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Classes

This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Immokalee FL home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Immokalee FL x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Immokalee FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Florida radiology technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Immokalee FL medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Immokalee FL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Immokalee FL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Immokalee FL schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Immokalee FL, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Immokalee Florida

Immokalee, Florida

Immokalee is an unincorporated area and a census-designated place (CDP) in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,154 at the 2010 census.[3]

Immokalee is the center of the region's agriculture industry and home to many immigrant and migrant families who work the vast fields which produce a large amount of the United States' fresh produce. Crops include cucumbers, bell peppers, citrus and about 90% of the nation's tomatoes that are harvested during the winter months.

Originally the region was occupied by the Calusa Indians and centuries later occupied by the Seminole, after they moved down from the northern part of Florida. Initially the settlement was known as Gopher Ridge by the Seminole and Miccosukee Indians.[4]Immokalee means "My Home" in Mikasuki language.[4]

When the swamps were drained in the region, agriculture became the dominant industry. European-American hunters, trappers, Indian traders, cowmen, and missionaries moved in before the development of permanent villages.[4] The first permanent settlement was founded in 1872.[4]

In 1921 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was extended south to Immokalee.[4]
