Most potential students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and often settle on the most affordable cost. But while cost and location should be taken into account, there are additional important qualifiers also. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.
Radiology Technician Occupation Summary

They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They can work in Sunol CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Sonography or ultrasound
Radiographers must care for their equipment and routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Sunol CA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.
X-Ray Tech Degree Options
The primary prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Sunol CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.
Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification
After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Sunol CA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.
Online Radiology Technologist Degrees
As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually performed in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Sunol CA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just be sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.
Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools
As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Sunol CA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.
Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Sunol CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.
Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the California xray tech programs you are assessing have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Sunol CA health care community and help with obtaining employment.
Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Sunol CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.
Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Sunol CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.
What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Sunol CA schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.
Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Sunol CA, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
Why Did You Decide to Be an Xray Technician? When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to consider questions you could be asked. Among the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not merely the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of general interview questions, so you must organize several ideas about how you want to respond to them. Given that there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but write down a few ideas and anecdotes that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
