But while expense and location must be considered, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For example, you must find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Job Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Sunset Beach CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Sunset Beach CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Sunset Beach CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several approve additional options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Sunset Beach CA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Sunset Beach CA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Sunset Beach CA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Sunset Beach CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the California radiology tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Sunset Beach CA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Sunset Beach CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Sunset Beach CA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Sunset Beach CA colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Sunset Beach CA, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the things that interviewers often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, along with a significant number of standard interview questions, so you need to organize some approaches about how you want to respond to them. Because there are numerous factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down a few concepts and talking points that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to develop your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
