Ceres CA x-ray tech internship programCongrats on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Ceres CA so you can train to be a radiologic technologist. And now that you have decided to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, just how do you tackle picking the right school and program so that you will get the appropriate training to become a skilled practitioner? And since the majority of states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you may need preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the schools you are considering in order to evaluate each program. Most prospective students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location must be taken into consideration, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For instance, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some opt to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in Ceres CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Ceres CA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Ceres CAThe standard requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that Ceres CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Ceres CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Ceres 95307As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Ceres CA home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Ceres CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ceres CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the California radiology tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Ceres CA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Ceres CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Ceres CA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Ceres CA schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Ceres CA, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you could be asked. One of the things that recruiters often ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to discover is not only the private reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what qualities and skills you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a significant number of routine interview questions, so you must prepare several strategies about how you want to answer them. Because there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the abilities you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down several concepts and topics that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can help you to develop your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.
