And since most states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you might require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can compare each program. Many prospective students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location should be taken into account, there are additional significant qualifiers as well. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Job Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same fundamental job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Ukiah CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Ukiah CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

x-ray machine in Ukiah CAThe basic prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Ukiah CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Ukiah CA employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Ukiah 95482As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often carried out in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Ukiah CA residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online approach to education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Ukiah CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Ukiah CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the California radiology tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Ukiah CA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Ukiah CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Ukiah CA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Ukiah CA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Ukiah CA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be a Radiology Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the things that recruiters often ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not merely the private reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and skills you possess that make you good at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, as well as a significant number of routine interview questions, so you should organize several ideas about how you would like to address them. Because there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down some ideas and topics that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Some Background on Ukiah California

Ukiah, California

Ukiah (/juːˈkaɪ.ə/ yew-KY-ə; formerly Ukiah City)[8] is the county seat and largest city of Mendocino County, California. With its accessible location (along the U.S. Route 101 corridor several miles south of CA 20), Ukiah serves as the city center for Mendocino County and much of neighboring Lake County. The Ukiah Valley is a center of a major wine production industry. In 1996, Ukiah was ranked the #1 best small town to live in California and the sixth-best place to live in the United States.[9] The population was 16,075 at the 2010 census.

Ukiah is located within Rancho Yokaya, one of several Spanish colonial land grants in what was then called "Alta California". The Yokaya grant, which covered the majority of the Ukiah valley, was named after the Pomo word meaning "deep valley."[10] The Pomo are the indigenous people who occupied the area at the time of Spanish colonization. This word was also the basis for the city name, as Ukiah was an anglicized form of Yokaya.[11]

The first Anglo settler in the Ukiah area was John Parker, a vaquero who worked for pioneer cattleman James Black.[12] Black had driven his stock up the Russian River valley and took possession of a block of grazing land at that locale; a crude block house was constructed to house Parker in order to protect him and the herd from the hostile indigenous local population.[12] This block house was located just south of present-day Ukiah on the banks of what was known as Wilson Creek.[12]

The next Anglo settler was a man named Samuel Lowry, who in 1856 constructed a log cabin approximately on the corner of today's East Perkins Street and North Main Street.[12] Lowery sold his claim to A.T. Perkins in the next spring of 1857, and the latter moved his family into the valley, thereby becoming the first pioneer family of the township.[12] Six others followed to make their home in the community that same year.[12] The first United States post office opened in 1858.[8] By 1859 the population of Ukiah had grown to about 100 people, making it a community sufficient in size to serve as the county seat when the California State Legislature divided Sonoma County to form Mendocino County in 1859.[13]

The town was initially reachable only by stagecoach, with a short rail line from San Francisco terminating in Petaluma, nearly 80 miles to the south, necessitating a horse-drawn trip taking two full days as late as 1870.[14] In subsequent years the rail line was extended further northward to Cloverdale, reducing the stagecoach trip to 30 miles — still enough to maintain the community's relative isolation and to fetter growth.[14]
