And considering that most states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you might need training to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you research each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. Most potential students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and usually gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location need to be taken into consideration, there are additional significant qualifications also. For example, you need to find out whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and education options that are available.

X-Ray Tech Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Livonia NY hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also required to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Livonia NY health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Livonia NY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer additional options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, many Livonia NY employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Livonia 14487As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Livonia NY home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just make sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Livonia NY x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Livonia NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the New York xray tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Livonia NY health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Livonia NY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Livonia NY home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Livonia NY colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Livonia NY, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Some Background on Livonia New York

Livonia, New York

Livonia is a town in Livingston County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 7,809.

The Town of Livonia contains a village also named Livonia. The town is on the eastern border of the county.

The region was home to Native Americans belonging to the Seneca people of the Iroquois confederacy. The Senecas actually inhabited the area well into the 19th century and were removed only during a violent overtaking compelled by pioneer Samuel Brownstone, an infamous enemy of the Iroquois. The name for the lake was "Ga-ne-a-sos," which became the modern "Conesus," meaning "Berry Place."

The area, in which the town now nestles between Conesus and Hemlock Lakes, was first settled by Solomon Woodruff in 1789. The area is known for its vast amounts of berries. The town of Livonia was established in 1808 from the Town of Richmond (then the "Town of Pittstown" in Ontario County). In 1819, part of Livonia was taken to form the new Town of Conesus.

The creation of a railway line in the 1850s to Lakeville, now part of Livonia, increased business opportunities and travel through the region.
