They can practice in Garrison NY clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Garrison NY radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many approve other options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Garrison NY employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Garrison 10524As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often carried out in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Garrison NY home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of finding and assessing Garrison NY x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? Most xray tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Garrison NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the New York radiology technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Garrison NY healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Garrison NY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Garrison NY home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Garrison NY colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Garrison NY, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to consider questions you could be asked. One of the things that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the personal reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what attributes and talents you have that make you outstanding at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of standard interview questions, so you must ready a number of approaches about how you would like to address them. Considering there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but take down a few ideas and anecdotes that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to enthuse the recruiter.
