But while expense and location need to be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifiers also. For example, you should find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are examining are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.

Radiology Tech Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may practice in Loris SC clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Loris SC health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Loris SC radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in South Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many provide additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Loris SC employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Loris 29569As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often carried out in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Loris SC residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just be sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Loris SC x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Loris SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the South Carolina xray technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Loris SC health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Loris SC healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Loris SC residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Loris SC schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Loris SC, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
