And now that you have decided to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, how do you set about picking the right college and program to ensure that you will obtain the proper training to become a skilled professional? And considering that most states do require that radiology techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you may need training to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. Most students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and usually gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location should be taken into consideration, there are other significant qualifications also. For instance, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and education options that are offered.

Radiology Tech Job Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Lugoff SC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment plus routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Lugoff SC health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Lugoff SC radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in South Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Lugoff SC employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Lugoff 29078As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Lugoff SC home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of locating and evaluating Lugoff SC x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Lugoff SC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the South Carolina xray tech colleges you are assessing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Lugoff SC health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Lugoff SC healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Lugoff SC residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Lugoff SC schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Lugoff SC, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not just the private reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, in addition to a significant number of typical interview questions, so you need to ready several ideas about how you want to answer them. Since there are numerous factors that go into selecting a career, you can answer this primary question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, aim to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the strengths you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but take down a few concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to wow the interviewer.
