There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can practice in Westtown PA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Westtown PA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or the state you will be working as applicable.

A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Westtown PA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. But just make sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Westtown PA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Westtown PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Pennsylvania xray technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Westtown PA healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Westtown PA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Westtown PA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Westtown PA colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Westtown PA, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
