Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Westover PA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Westover PA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Westover PA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Westover PA x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Westover PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Pennsylvania radiology technician programs you are interested in have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Westover PA health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Westover PA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Westover PA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Westover PA colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Westover PA, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become an Xray Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not merely the private reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, as well as a certain number of standard interview questions, so you should prepare several strategies about how you would like to address them. Given that there are numerous factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but take down some concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences.
