X-Ray Technician Job Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Sun Prairie WI hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Sun Prairie WI radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Wisconsin or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Sun Prairie WI employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less costly than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of finding and assessing Sun Prairie WI x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Sun Prairie WI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Wisconsin radiology tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Sun Prairie WI healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Sun Prairie WI home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Sun Prairie WI colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Sun Prairie WI, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. Among the questions that recruiters frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to discover is not only the private reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but additionally what attributes and talents you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you should organize several approaches about how you want to address them. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you along with the strengths you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Sun Prairie, Wisconsin

Sun Prairie is a city in Dane County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. A suburb of Madison, it is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's population was 29,441 at the 2010 U.S. Census. It is the second most populous city in Dane County after Madison.[9]

President Martin Van Buren commissioned a party of 45 men, including Augustus A. Bird, to build a capitol for the Territory of Wisconsin in Madison. The group left Milwaukee on May 26, 1837, and traveled for days in the rain. On June 9, the group emerged at the edge of the prairie and with the sun shining for the first time in days, carved the words "Sun Prairie" into a tree. Charles Bird returned to the area two years later and became the first settler.[10][11]

The Town of Sun Prairie was created on February 2, 1846.[12] The village of Sun Prairie, which grew from that town, was incorporated in an act of the Wisconsin legislature on March 6, 1868.[13] Sun Prairie was incorporated as a city in 1958.[14]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.25 square miles (31.73 km2), of which, 12.23 square miles (31.68 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.[15]/>

The Yahara River Valley encompasses part of the city of Sun Prairie. This area contains deep glacial deposits created by the Wisconsin Glaciation. The eastern part of Dane County, known as the drumlin and marsh physiographic area, includes most of Sun Prairie. The deposits found in this area include general glacial deposits and marsh deposits, and consist of many small drumlins interspersed with shallow glacial deposits having poorly defined drainage.
