  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Lake Mills WI radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Wisconsin or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Lake Mills WI employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

Practical training is typically provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Lake Mills WI home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally more affordable than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just be sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

As soon as you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Lake Mills WI x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Lake Mills WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Wisconsin radiology technician schools you are interested in have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Lake Mills WI healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Lake Mills WI healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Lake Mills WI home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Lake Mills WI schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Lake Mills WI, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
