But while location and cost must be taken into consideration, there are additional critical qualifiers as well. For instance, you should ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and education choices that are available.

Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in Argyle WI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment plus frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally expected to retain detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Argyle WI health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

x-ray machine in Argyle WIThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Argyle WI radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Wisconsin or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Argyle WI employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Argyle 53504As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Argyle WI residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Argyle WI x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Argyle WI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Wisconsin radiology technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Argyle WI medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Argyle WI healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Argyle WI residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Argyle WI schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Argyle WI, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to review questions you might be asked. Among the questions that recruiters often ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not merely the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what qualities and skills you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you should organize some approaches about how you want to answer them. Because there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the abilities you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but jot down a few concepts and topics that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample responses can help you to develop your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.
