  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Shiner TX radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number provide additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Shiner TX employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Shiner TX x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Shiner TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Texas xray tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Shiner TX healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Shiner TX healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Shiner TX residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Shiner TX colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Shiner TX, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
