X-Ray Tech Occupation Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Brookshire TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment plus regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Brookshire TX medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Brookshire TXThe standard prerequisite for attending a radiology tech program is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Brookshire TX radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Brookshire TX employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Brookshire 77423As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Brookshire TX home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

When you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Brookshire TX x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Brookshire TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Texas radiology tech colleges you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Brookshire TX healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Brookshire TX healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Brookshire TX residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Brookshire TX schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Brookshire TX, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you might be asked. Among the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not merely the private reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and abilities you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you need to organize some strategies about how you would like to answer them. Considering there are several variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down a few concepts and topics that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
