But while cost and location should be taken into consideration, there are other important qualifiers also. For instance, you must find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Work Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Sunbright TN clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Sunbright TN health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Sunbright TN radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Tennessee or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several accept other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Sunbright TN employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually carried out in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Sunbright TN home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

After you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Sunbright TN x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Sunbright TN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Tennessee radiology technician schools you are assessing have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Sunbright TN medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Sunbright TN healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Sunbright TN residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Sunbright TN schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Sunbright TN, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to consider questions you could be asked. Among the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not merely the private reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but additionally what characteristics and skills you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a significant number of typical interview questions, so you should prepare some ideas about how you want to address them.
