There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same principal job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Rockwood TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Rockwood TN radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many approve additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Rockwood TN employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Rockwood TN residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Rockwood TN x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Rockwood TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Tennessee radiology technician programs you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Rockwood TN healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Rockwood TN healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Rockwood TN residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Rockwood TN schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Rockwood TN, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you might be asked. What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not just the personal reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you good at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of general interview questions, so you need to prepare some approaches about how you would like to answer them.
