But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and education options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Career Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Jonesborough TN hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Jonesborough TN medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Jonesborough TN radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several approve other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Jonesborough TN employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Jonesborough 37659As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often provided in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Jonesborough TN residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally cheaper than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Jonesborough TN x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Jonesborough TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the Tennessee radiology technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Jonesborough TN healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Jonesborough TN healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Jonesborough TN home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Jonesborough TN colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Jonesborough TN, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not merely the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and talents you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you need to organize some ideas about how you would like to address them. Since there are so many variables that go into choosing a career, you can address this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you in addition to the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but jot down some concepts and anecdotes that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.

Some Background on Jonesborough Tennessee

Jonesborough, Tennessee

Jonesborough (historically also Jonesboro) is a town in, and the county seat of, Washington County, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. The population was 5,975 at the 2010 census. It is "Tennessee's oldest town".

Jonesborough is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.

Jonesborough was founded in 1779, 17 years before Tennessee became a state and while the area was under the jurisdiction of North Carolina. It was named after North Carolina legislator, Willie Jones, who had supported the state's westward expansion across the Appalachian Mountains.[4]

The town was renamed "Jonesboro" for a period of time, but it has been changed back to the original spelling.[5]

Jonesborough was originally a part of the Washington District. In 1784, it became the capital of the autonomous State of Franklin (ostensibly named after American founding father, Benjamin Franklin). Congress, however, never recognized Franklin, which was re-claimed by North Carolina in late 1788.
