They can practice in Centerville TN hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Centerville TN radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several provide other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Centerville TN employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Centerville TN home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally cheaper than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Centerville TN x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Centerville TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Tennessee radiology tech programs you are reviewing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Centerville TN medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Centerville TN healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Centerville TN home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Centerville TN colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Centerville TN, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
