  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable also. Something to bear in mind is that Eagle Butte SD radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in South Dakota or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many offer other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Eagle Butte SD employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Practical training is often provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

As soon as you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Eagle Butte SD x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? Most xray tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Eagle Butte SD employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the South Dakota radiology tech programs you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Eagle Butte SD health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Eagle Butte SD healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Eagle Butte SD home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Eagle Butte SD colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Eagle Butte SD, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
