These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Job Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Pamplico SC clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and frequently assess its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Pamplico SC radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in South Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Pamplico SC employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Pamplico 29583As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Pamplico SC home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Pamplico SC x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Pamplico SC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the South Carolina radiology technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Pamplico SC health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pamplico SC healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Pamplico SC residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Pamplico SC schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Pamplico SC, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
