But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Work Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical principal job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Latta SC hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment plus regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Latta SC medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that Latta SC radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in South Carolina or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Latta SC employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Programs

This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Latta SC home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Latta SC x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Latta SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the South Carolina radiology tech programs you are reviewing have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Latta SC medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Latta SC healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Latta SC home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Latta SC schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Latta SC, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Some Background on Latta South Carolina

Latta, South Carolina

Latta is a town in Dillon County, South Carolina, United States. Latta is the second largest town in Dillon County.[4] As of the 2016 census, it had a population of 1,334.[5]

Latta was established in 1887.[4] The town arose from a need for a railroad, which helped to eliminate "the need to travel to Wilmington, North Carolina, in order to reach many points in South Carolina."[4] Thus, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built two depots; one in the city of Dillon and the other 7 miles (11 km) to the south in Latta.[4] The depots were completed in 1888.[4] Many families were drawn to this area, and in March 1890, "the town of Latta was incorporated by the state legislature and received its charter."[4]

The town was named for the Latta family of settlers.[6] More specifically, it was named after Captain Robert Latta, who was from York County, South Carolina; he orchestrated the engineering for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.[4] Captain Latta not only surveyed the area for the railroad, but he also constructed the original plans for the town of Latta.[4] Because of Latta's railroad facilities, the town grew rapidly, especially from 1900 to 1910.[4]

Latta has an established historic district, mostly located on Main Street, and many of these structures are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.[4] Latta has about 55 properties, constructed between ca. 1890 and ca. 1930, that are a part of the historic district.[7] Furthermore, Latta is home to one of the thirteen Carnegie public library buildings in South Carolina.[8] The Latta library opened in 1914 and is "one of five of South Carolina's original 14 Carnegie libraries still in use as a library."[9] The post office in Latta has been in operation since 1888.[10]

In April 2014, Mayor Earl Bullard fired Police Chief Crystal Moore, allegedly because Moore is lesbian. Bullard said on the telephone, "I would much rather have — and I will say this to anybody's face — somebody who drank and drank too much taking care of my child than I had somebody whose lifestyle is questionable around children. … I'm not going to let two women stand up there and hold hands and let my child be aware of it. And I'm not going to see them do it with two men neither."[11]
