Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Marylhurst OR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also frequently analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Marylhurst OR health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that Marylhurst OR radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Oregon or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many provide other options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Marylhurst OR employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Marylhurst 97036As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Marylhurst OR home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing Marylhurst OR x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Marylhurst OR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the Oregon radiology technician schools you are assessing have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Marylhurst OR health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Marylhurst OR healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Marylhurst OR home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Marylhurst OR colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Marylhurst OR, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Some Background on Marylhurst Oregon

Marylhurst University

Marylhurst University is a private, nonprofit applied liberal arts and business university located in Marylhurst, Oregon, United States, nine miles (14 km) south of Portland on the Willamette River. It is among the oldest collegiate degree-granting institutions in Oregon, awarding its first degree in 1897. Marylhurst was founded as St. Mary's College and run for many years by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

The university offers bachelor's degree completion programs in diverse liberal arts and business fields, and graduate degrees in such fields as business administration, food systems and society, teaching, art therapy counseling, divinity and applied theology, and interdisciplinary studies. After its establishment in 1893, Marylhurst became the first women's liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest.

The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a Roman Catholic religious teaching congregation, arrived in Oregon in 1859.[3] The Sisters came to Oregon from Montreal at the request of the people and clergy of the state to serve their educational needs, and established St. Mary's Academy in Portland that year.[4]

In 1893, the group started St. Mary's Academy and College[4] as the first liberal arts college to serve the educational needs of Pacific Northwest women. The school began in downtown Portland, Oregon, where St. Mary's Academy is still located.[3] The Sisters purchased 63 acres (250,000 m2) between Lake Oswego and West Linn in 1908. The Sisters named the pastoral land Marylhurst, which means "Mary's Woods". The college was moved to the new property in 1930, and St. Mary's was renamed Marylhurst College.[4] The following year, the school received its first accreditation from the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools.[5]

In 1959, Marylhurst College became an independent institution and formed a Board of Trustees, separate from the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. In 1974, the college transitioned to a co-educational institution and it became the first liberal arts college in the United States to be designated as a college for lifelong learning.
