A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Porum OK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

- Fluoroscopy
Radiographers must maintain their equipment and frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Porum OK medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.
Radiology Technician Degrees Offered
The primary requirement for attending an x-ray tech college is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to keep in mind is that Porum OK radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Oklahoma or the state you will be working as applicable.
X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification
After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many approve additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Porum OK employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.
Online Radiology Technologist Classes
As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Porum OK residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.
Topics to Ask Radiographer Schools
When you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Porum OK x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.
Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Porum OK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.
Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Oklahoma xray technician programs you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Porum OK health care community and help with obtaining employment.
Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Porum OK healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.
Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Porum OK residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.
What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Porum OK schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.
Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Porum OK, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Porum, Oklahoma
Porum is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. It was named for John Porum Davis, a rancher, Civil War veteran, and Cherokee Nation councilman from the Canadian District in Indian Territory. The community was first known as Porum Gap, which united with another village named Starvilla in 1905. The product of this union became the present town of Porum. The population was 727 at the 2010 census, an 0.3 percent increase from 725 at the 2000 census.[3]
The area is rich in history, including that of the Starr clan who were of the Cherokee "Treaty faction" and became immersed in troubles during the early turbulent days of Cherokee Nation. They were attacked by, and counterattacked, men of the Ross faction. Tom Starr was alleged to have killed 100 men in his time, although the figure may be exaggerated. Tom was a half-blood, Irish and Cherokee, and had five sons, one of whom was Sam who became the husband of Belle Starr, forever linked with the history of Porum. In later years, Pony Starr who lived on the edge of Porum was involved in the Porum Range War and was regarded as the straightest shot and most fearless man of his clan.
A post office was established in Porum Gap March 25, 1890. The Midland Valley Railroad came to the Porum area in 1903. The town of Porum was formed in 1905, following the merger of Porum Gap and Starvilla.[3]
