Radiology Tech Occupation Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Gans OK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Gans OK medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Gans OK radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Oklahoma or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept other options for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Gans OK employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Gans OK residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just make certain that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Gans OK x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Gans OK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Oklahoma xray technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Gans OK health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Gans OK healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Gans OK home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Gans OK colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Gans OK, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not just the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you must ready some ideas about how you want to answer them. Since there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you as well as the talents you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the job. Don't try to memorize a response, but jot down several ideas and topics that pertain to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
