Next, they check tuition and typically gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while expense and location need to be considered, there are other important qualifiers as well. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

Radiology Technician Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical major job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Washingtonville OH hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment plus routinely assess its performance and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Washingtonville OH medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Washingtonville OH radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Washingtonville OH employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Washingtonville 44490As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often carried out in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Washingtonville OH home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just make certain that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Washingtonville OH x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Washingtonville OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Ohio xray tech schools you are reviewing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Washingtonville OH medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Washingtonville OH healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Washingtonville OH residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Washingtonville OH schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Washingtonville OH, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
