But while expense and location must be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifications also. For example, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are reviewing are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Career Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same principal job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can practice in Peninsula OH hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

x-ray machine in Peninsula OHThe basic prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech college is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that Peninsula OH radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several provide other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Peninsula OH employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Peninsula OH home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just make certain that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Peninsula OH x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Peninsula OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Ohio xray technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Peninsula OH healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Peninsula OH home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Peninsula OH colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Peninsula OH, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Peninsula Ohio

Peninsula, Ohio

Peninsula is a village in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 565 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area.

It is located in the middle of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which provides a source of tourism to the village. Blossom Music Center is located on its outskirts. The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail runs through just west of downtown, and many bikers and hikers stop for refreshments as it is one of the only towns between Akron and Cleveland.

Peninsula is bordered on its east side by Boston Heights. It is a part of Boston Township.[6]

Over 20 places in Peninsula are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Settled in 1818, Peninsula, on the Cuyahoga River halfway between Cleveland and Akron, is a well-preserved mid-19th-century town, that grew and prospered with the establishment of the Ohio and Erie Canal and the Valley Railroad. The village was plotted in 1837 by Herman Bronson. Peninsula was a bustling canal boat stop—home to several mills, stone quarries and boat yards, five hotels and 14 bars until 1887. The Gothic Revival Bronson Memorial Church, originally constructed in 1835 as the Bethel Church, according to William Perrin's History of Summit County (1881) was an attempt to “introduce moral and religious tactics among the vicious and unlawful practices of the canal boatmen.” In 1889 the church was remodeled in the Gothic Revival style. The historic district extends along Main Street and contains many fine examples of early 19th-century architecture. The dominant Greek Revival style reflects popular architectural tastes at the time the area was settled by New Englanders. A notable high style example of the village’s Greek Revival architecture is the 1824 Bronson House, built of locally quarried sandstone blocks. Several canal-era houses are typical of the popular Western Reserve New England building type called the Upright-and-Wing, particularly suitable for the early 19th-century Ohio frontier. The main gable-front two-story section contained a parlor and bedchambers, while the kitchen was located in a perpendicular one-story eave oriented section. Other architectural styles include Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Stick and Colonial Revival. The 1886 Stick style Boston Township Hall originally functioned as the village high school. The three-story hip roofed building contains a pyramidal roof tower with an open belfry. The Township Hall is now the Cuyahoga Valley Historical Museum.[7]
