But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the credentials and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They may work in New Carlisle OH clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As New Carlisle OH health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that New Carlisle OH radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Ohio or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer additional options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many New Carlisle OH employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in New Carlisle 45344As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is usually performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your New Carlisle OH home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

When you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of finding and evaluating New Carlisle OH x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous New Carlisle OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Ohio radiology tech programs you are reviewing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the New Carlisle OH healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Carlisle OH healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their New Carlisle OH home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the New Carlisle OH schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in New Carlisle OH, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
