But first, let’s discuss what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Work Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Bedford OH clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Bedford OH medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Bedford OH radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Ohio or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Bedford OH employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Bedford 44146As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Bedford OH home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Bedford OH x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bedford OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Ohio radiology tech schools you are interested in have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bedford OH healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Bedford OH healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Bedford OH home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Bedford OH schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Bedford OH, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what characteristics and talents you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will probably be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you must organize several approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Since there are numerous variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down a few ideas and talking points that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to wow the interviewer.
