But first, let’s explore what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Career Summary

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They may work in Ruffin NC clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Ruffin NC health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to bear in mind is that Ruffin NC radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in North Carolina or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer additional options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Ruffin NC employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Ruffin 27326As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Ruffin NC residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

Once you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Ruffin NC x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ruffin NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the North Carolina radiology tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Ruffin NC medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Ruffin NC healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Ruffin NC residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Ruffin NC schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Ruffin NC, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
