And because most states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you may require preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s essential that you assess each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Most prospective students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and usually gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifiers also. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.

Radiology Tech Job Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Cove City NC clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Cove City NC health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Cove City NC radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in North Carolina or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Cove City NC employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Cove City NC x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cove City NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the North Carolina xray tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Cove City NC health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Cove City NC healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Cove City NC home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Cove City NC schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Cove City NC, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
