But while cost and location should be taken into account, there are additional important qualifiers as well. For example, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Career Summary

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Springville NY clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Springville NY radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many provide additional options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Springville NY employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Springville 14141As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Springville NY residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just make sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Springville NY x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Springville NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the New York xray technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Springville NY medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Springville NY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Springville NY home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Springville NY colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Springville NY, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you might be asked. Among the questions that recruiters often ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to discover is not only the private reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you must organize a number of approaches about how you want to answer them. Since there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can address this fundamental question in a number of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down some ideas and anecdotes that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to wow the recruiter.
