X-Ray Technician Career Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Rensselaerville NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Rensselaerville NY medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Rensselaerville NY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several provide other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Rensselaerville NY employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

This is no different for online degree programs. Practical training is typically performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Rensselaerville NY home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Rensselaerville NY x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Rensselaerville NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the New York radiology tech schools you are assessing have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Rensselaerville NY medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Rensselaerville NY healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Rensselaerville NY residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Rensselaerville NY schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Rensselaerville NY, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Some Background on Rensselaerville New York

Rensselaerville, New York

Rensselaerville is a town in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census.[3] The town is named after Stephen Van Rensselaer.[5] The "official" hamlets are Cooksburg, Medusa, Potter Hollow, Preston Hollow, and Rensselaerville.[citation needed]

Rensselaerville was once part of the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, as such the people who farmed the land were technically leaseholders of the patroon under a feudal system, first as part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, then under the English colony, and then U.S. state, of New York. Some of the earliest settlement in Rensselaerville was along the five Native American paths that crossed the town in the early 18th century. The southwestern corner along one of these, that connected the Hudson River to the Schoharie Valley was the first section of the town to be settled, this would be around 1712. This path was also the one used during wars between the Stockbridge Indians and those at Schoharie.[5]

In 1787, the patroon had a survey and census taken in order to enroll squatters and collect the quitrent required of settlers on his lands.[5]

Rensselaerville was created from part of the town of Watervliet in 1790. In 1795, the northern part of the town was lost to create the new town of Berne. Additional territory was lost from the eastern part of the town upon the formation of the town of Westerlo in 1815.

In 1795, after Shays' Rebellion Daniel Shays moved from Massachusetts to Preston Hollow, a hamlet in Rensselaerville. His son became one of the leading citizens of the town.[5]
