And considering that the majority of states do require that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you might require preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you investigate each of the schools you are considering in order to compare each program. Many students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and typically settle on the most affordable cost. But while location and cost must be considered, there are other significant qualifications also. For example, you should ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

Radiology Tech Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Montauk NY clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Montauk NY medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Montauk NY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Montauk NY employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Montauk NY home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Montauk NY x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Montauk NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the New York radiology technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Montauk NY medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Montauk NY healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Montauk NY home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Montauk NY schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Montauk NY, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Some Background on Montauk New York

Montauk, New York

Montauk /ˈmɒntɔːk/ is a census-designated place (CDP) that includes the hamlet with the same name located in the town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, on the eastern end of the South Shore of Long Island. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP population was 3,326.[2]

The CDP encompasses an area that stretches approximately 13 miles (21 km) from Napeague, New York to the easternmost tip of New York State at Montauk Point Light. The hamlet encompasses a small area about half way between the two points.

Located at the tip of the South Fork peninsula of Long Island, 118 miles (190 km) east of Midtown Manhattan, Montauk has been used as an Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force base. The Montauk Point Light was the first lighthouse in New York state and is the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States.

Montauk is a major tourist destination and has six state parks. It is particularly famous for its fishing, claiming to have more world saltwater fishing records than any other port in the world.[3] Located 20 miles (32 km) off the Connecticut coast, it is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York state.[4]

Montauk derives its name from the Montaukett tribe, an Algonquian-speaking tribe who lived in the area. In 1614, Dutch explorer Adriaen Block encountered the tribe at Montauk Point, which he named Hoeck van de Visschers, or "Point of the Fishers".[5] Two decades later, in 1637, the Montauketts sided for their own protection with the English in the Pequot War in Connecticut. In the aftermath the Montauketts were to sell Gardiners Island. In 1648 what would become the Town of Easthampton[6] (first Maidstone) was sold to settlers by the colony of Connecticut and the colony of New Haven while retaining the lands to the east, from the hills rising above where the first fort stood (Napeague, New York) to Montauk Point. The western boundary of today's Hither Hills State Park is also known as the 1648 purchase line.
