Greenville NY x-ray tech internship programCongratulations on your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Greenville NY in order to learn to be a radiologic technician. But now that you have decided to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, exactly how do you go about selecting the right school and program to ensure that you will get the appropriate training to become a skilled practitioner? And because most states do require that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently work you might require training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s important that you research each of the schools you are looking at in order to compare each program. A number of potential students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location should be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifiers also. For example, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Job Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may work in Greenville NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Greenville NY medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

x-ray machine in Greenville NYThe basic requirement for attending an x-ray tech college is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to consider is that Greenville NY radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many accept other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, many Greenville NY employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Greenville 12083As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically carried out in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Greenville NY home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just confirm that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Greenville NY x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Greenville NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the New York radiology tech programs you are assessing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Greenville NY medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Greenville NY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Greenville NY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Greenville NY colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Greenville NY, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What made you decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not only the private reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and talents you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you need to prepare some approaches about how you would like to answer them. Since there are so many variables that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work interests you along with the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but write down a few concepts and talking points that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Going over sample responses can help you to develop your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.
