Elbridge NY x-ray tech internship programCongratulations on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Elbridge NY so you can become a radiology technician. But now that you have decided to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, how do you tackle selecting the ideal college and program to ensure that you will get the proper training to become a skilled practitioner? And since most states do mandate that radiology technicians become licensed, based on where you ultimately work you may need training to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you assess each of the schools you are considering in order to compare each program. Many students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically settle on the lowest cost. But while cost and location should be considered, there are other critical qualifiers also. For instance, you should find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and training options that are available.

Radiology Technician Job Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the identical major job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Elbridge NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment plus routinely evaluate its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Elbridge NY medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Elbridge NYThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech program is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Elbridge NY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer other options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Elbridge NY employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Elbridge 13060As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Elbridge NY residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Elbridge NY x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Elbridge NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the New York radiology technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Elbridge NY health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Elbridge NY healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Elbridge NY home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Elbridge NY schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Elbridge NY, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you might be asked. Among the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer prospects is "What made you select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the private reasons you might have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what qualities and abilities you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a significant number of typical interview questions, so you need to ready a number of ideas about how you would like to answer them. Given that there are several variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the strengths you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but jot down some concepts and talking points that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the interviewer.

Some Background on Elbridge New York

Elbridge, New York

Elbridge is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 5,922 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Elbridge Gerry,[3] the fifth Vice President of the United States, and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The Town of Elbridge is west of Syracuse, on the west border of the county. The town contains a village which is also named Elbridge.

Elbridge was part of Military Township No. 5 (Camillus) created following the American Revolution and given to veterans in lieu of payment for service during the War for Independence. This tract comprised most of present-day Camillus and all of Van Buren and Marcellus in what is now the County of Onondaga in Central New York's Finger Lake's Region. The Town of Elbridge was formed in 1829 from the Town of Camillus.

The Town of Elbridge includes two incorporated villages: the Village of Elbridge (incorporated in 1848) and the Village of Jordan (incorporated in 1835).

An 1896 article from Onondaga's Centennial by Dwight H. Bruce describes the area as "a densely wooded wilderness, frequented by Indians and inhabited by bears, wolves and other beasts of the forest and could not have presented an appearance other than of gloomy waste." It can be assumed that neither the Natives nor the incoming settlers necessarily agreed with Bruce's negative assessment. Before the arrival of the white settlers, the native presence was pervasive and sustained. The Onondaga ("People of the Hill") of the Iroquois Nation had several fortified settlements in the area. The largest still exists on the Seneca River in what is now known as Jack's Reef. In fact, according to some legends, Cross Lake, which forms the northern boundary of the town, was the home of the historical Hiawatha.
