Bayville NY x-ray tech internship programCongrats on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Bayville NY so you can become a radiologic technologist. But now that you have made a decision to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, just how do you go about choosing the right college and program to ensure that you will receive the proper training to become a qualified practitioner? And since the majority of states do require that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you might need training to pass a licensing test. So it’s essential that you research each of the colleges you are looking at in order to compare each program. Many students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location must be taken into consideration, there are other important qualifiers as well. For example, you should ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

Radiology Technician Occupation Summary

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. They can practice in Bayville NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Bayville NY medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that Bayville NY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several accept additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Bayville NY employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Bayville 11709As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Bayville NY home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Bayville NY x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bayville NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the New York xray technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Bayville NY healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Bayville NY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Bayville NY residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Bayville NY schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Bayville NY, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
